We understand that homeowners want their house to stand apart from others in the neighborhood. There is a unique defining quality that we love in our home. We also have that one thing that, if we were to change it, would make a world of difference. That one thing for many homeowners is the garage door. It’s either old and outdated, or it’s dented or damaged and makes the home look dated. Let’s talk about garage door styles.
Some garage doors just don’t look good on some houses. A nice, modern-looking home, for example, wouldn’t look good with barn door style garage doors. A beautiful country home or cottage home, on the other hand, would look amazing with the same door. Choosing your garage door style is much the same as choosing your siding or roofing material. It should all come together to add to your home’s curb appeal and overall appearance.
Reasons to Change Your Garage Door
We hear a variety of reasons homeowners want to change their garage doors. No reason is a bad reason, because you’re making a decision that is yours alone to make. No one is going to think it’s silly to change a working garage door simply because you’re tired of it. Well, maybe that one guy down the street, but his opinion doesn’t come into play. Here are some very valid reasons to change your garage door:
- It’s dented. A dented garage door doesn’t hold in cool air or seal out the elements as well as a new one. Dents can be repaired, but the door may still leak cool air and allow moisture and hot air to enter the garage.
- It’s scratched from repeated use. Yes, you can repair these, too, but if you want a new door, buy a new door.
- It doesn’t match the house. Style matters. That’s why we have so many styles available. And just because the previous owners liked the garage door doesn’t mean you have to.
- You don’t like the material. Material is a major issue for a lot of homeowners. If you prefer aluminum but your existing garage door is wood, order an aluminum garage door.
How to Dispose of Your Garage Door
Remember the old adage one man’s trash is another man’s treasure? The best way to dispose of your garage door is to sell it to someone else who will enjoy it or donate it to an organization that helps people who need help. Habitat for Humanity is a wonderful organization for donations such as this. They accept all sorts of donations from home renovations including kitchen cabinets and countertops, appliances, toilets and tubs, and yes, your old garage door.
