Overhead Door Co. of Tampa Bay has had the privilege of sponsoring the WQYK St.Jude Children’s Research Hospital Radiothon for these past few years, and were blessed to have been able to do so again this year. The radiothon was last week, January 25th and 26th at Westfield Brandon Mall. An amazing $220,875 was raised this year!
St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance. No child is ever denied treatment because of the family’s inability to pay. They do research and treatments for other pediatric catastrophic diseases also. The survival rates for childhood cancers went from less than 20 percent when the hospital opened in 1962 to 80 percent today.
The purpose of the radiothon is to increase the community’s awareness about St.Jude, and to raise money to help save those precious kids. For two days, the WQYK 99.5 DJ’s highlight different St. Jude patient stories. It is heart wrenching to hear some of the stories, but there are also many stories full of hope and victory.
We think that this is a very worthy cause here at Overhead Door Co. of Tampa Bay, and are honored to be a part of it. We are very proud to say that our employees also get involved in this two day event. Not only do some make a monetary donation, they are very generous in donating their time to help answer the phones at the radiothon. I, myself, got to talk to some GREAT people on the phones this year. I heard more than one time “I couldn’t afford to donate last year”. One man I was talking to on the phone, was actually calling for the second time that day. He had just became a “partner in hope”, which is someone who donates at least $20 monthly for a year, and was doing a second sponsorship on another one of his credit cards! He was one of those that couldn’t afford to donate last year. Another lady shared with me how her daughter was in need of help, and although St.Jude couldn’t help with her daughter’s specific needs, they went above and beyond in helping her get in contact with where she needed to go and what to do. And there were many who donated in remembrance of someone they loved. What a great community we have!
Yes, this economy has also certainly made it rough for our business as well. We can certainly relate to the many callers who couldn’t afford to donate last year, but as long as we are allowed to continue in business, we will continue to partner with our community and the St.Jude radiothon. Thank you
